For most of my life I never
really understood how much God desires us to honor one another. I thought
it was almost a virtue to dishonor people and that somehow by dishonoring
people, this would give God more honor. Well, I now see that God deserves
all the honor, but the One who deserves all honor has chosen to bestow
honor and glory on His creation by making them in His image and likeness
and by dying for them on the cross and by finally taking some to be His
very Bride for eternity.
1 Cor. 12:24 says God bestows
more abundant honor on the part of the body that has any lack. 1 Pet.
2:17 says, "we are to honor all people." We are told to honor
weaker vessels. (1 Pet. 3:7) Wives are to be especially honored because
they are a weaker vessel. (weaker and not lesser) We are to honor those
in authority.(1 Pet. 2:17) In honoring we are to prefer others above ourselves.
(Romans. 12:10) We are to honor parents (Exod. 20:12) We are to honor
elders (Lev. 19:32).
In a sense, when I honor something in someone, I am honoring God; because
"every good and perfect gift comes down from above, from the Father
of lights." (James 1:17a) So, whatever is honorable and whatever
is worthy and whatever is worthy of praise has to be something that the
Perfect One has done inside that person. Is there any true beauty or goodness
apart from the very personality of God? All goodness comes from Him. (Psalm
16:2) The more that I have entered into God's heart, the more that I am
able to see God's handiwork within His creation!
The Greek word used for honor means
to value, to esteem, to prize, to not take lightly and to ascribe worth.
People down through the ages have suffered greatly due to another's dishonor
of them as a person. Could I hate, rape, scream at, murder, or take advantage
of someone that I was honoring from the inside of my heart? It is only
those individuals that we dishonor that we abuse and mistrust!
The story goes that a man went to a garage sale and bought an old rusty
motorcycle for $35.00. Several months later this man discovered that this
old, rusty motorcycle was originally made for Elvis Presley and therefore
it was worth a whole lot of money! The value of the motorcycle was not
in the fact of its present condition, but in the truth of the one it was
originally designed for.
Mankind was originally designed for the most amazing and powerful and
Royal Being in the entire universe and it is this destiny and purpose
that has placed tremendous value and worth on every one of His creation.
My prayer for this year is that I will not see the old, rusty, sinful
vessel; but instead I will see the vessel made for God's pleasure and
through the grace of His Son will be restored to its true dignity and
worth. After the restoration one one's dignity and worth, he will then
fulfill his eternal purpose as a creature of honor and glory. (Psalm 8:5)
May our meditation on the birth of the Christ-Child in human flesh help
us to see that our Creator desires to restore all that was lost in the
garden in the fall of man.
