Anyone else have days that it all gets overwhelming? We have had a hard few months. One thing after another has happened. One day it was just all too much. Do I call someone for advice? Do I call someone for prayer? I realized only one person could help me. I told my children I just had to go for a walk. We have an acre of property and so it is perfect for walking. When I go for a walk, that is my quiet time and an opportunity to pray. No matter what advice I received or who I got to pray, it would come down to me and God. I stepped outside. “Ok God, it is just you and me. What should I do?” In my heart I felt, “Breathe and Walk.” So I took deep breaths and walked around my yard. As I walked I realized it wasn’t just for now. I need to breathe and walk every day. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7 KJV Our beginning started with a breath. It is necessary to us. Our physical life ends when we stop breathing, in the same way we can't live spiritually without breathing. What is our spiritual breath? All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV A minister was asked, If you had to give up prayer or Bible reading, which would you choose? He replied, Which would you prefer to give up, inhaling or exhaling? 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. - John 1:1-3 KJV God’s exhale is our inhale. God spoke and the world came to be. God breathed into man. Spiritually we must inhale the word of God. The word of God is necessary to our spiritual survival. 3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every [word] that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. - Deuteronomy 8:3 KJV 63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life. - John 6:63 KJV Every inhale must have an exhale. If we inhale the word of God then we must exhale in praise. 1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. 2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. 3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. 4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. 5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. 6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD. - Psalm 150:1-6 KJV 3 Because thy lovingkindness [is] better than life, my lips shall praise thee. 4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name. 5 My soul shall be satisfied as [with] marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise [thee] with joyful lips: - Psalm 63:3-5 KJV Even in our physical we must exhale and what we exhale is not for us. The by-product of oxygen used by our body is carbon dioxide. If we held it in we would not be able to take in more oxygen but also our bodies can’t use carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is used by plants, which take the carbon dioxide and create oxygen. In the spiritual our exhale is not for us, it is for the glory of God. Not only is our praise for God but we encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ. When we praise God for what He has done, it increases the faith of those around us. If He did something for me, He will do the same for another person. 5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and [in] all knowledge; 6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: - 1 Corinthians 1:5-6 KJV God’s instruction for me was not just to breathe, but also to walk. Spiritually we can’t just sit and “breathe,” we need to walk. If we don’t move we become stagnant. 9 And it shall come to pass, [that] every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh. 10 And it shall come to pass, [that] the fishers shall stand upon it from Engedi even unto Eneglaim; they shall be a [place] to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many. 11 But the miry places thereof and the marishes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt. - Ezekiel 47:9-11 KJV Ezekiel had a vision of a river flowing out of the temple. Everywhere the river moved, things lived, but in the miry places or the marshes where the water stopped moving things died. We have to move. Our physical body was made to move and so is our spiritual body. Many times in scripture we see the way we live referred to as walking and we are given instruction on how we are to walk. We walk by faith. (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV We walk humbly and not proud. He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8 KJV My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.Psalm 34:2 KJV We walk a new way and worthy of Jesus sacrifice Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4 KJV Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. Psalm 1:1 KJV That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Colossians 1:10-11 KJV Something happened as I walked around my yard taking deep breaths. My spirit calmed. My brain cleared. The chaos in my mind settled and plans were able to form. Have things been perfect since then? No, life isn’t perfect. But they are manageable. We have solutions for some things and peace about others. I may have come inside after my walk but spiritually I am still just breathing and walking. My son is about to start working on fractions again in math. Many times the problems have them take the fractions down to the least common denominator. In life no matter the situation I face, the common denominator is that I will always need to breathe and walk. So today no matter what you are facing, remember to just breathe and walk.
